What is the Trinity or Godhead?

There are many explanations out there on the internet for the Trinity or Godhead. Some helpful and some not so helpful… I hope to somewhat simplify this answer, but I must admit that it is not that simple. An infinite God cannot be truly explained. If He were easily explained… then He would not be God. There is always going to be some mystery to Him that we will never unravel. But I will do my best to at least show a Biblical understanding of what it is. This short summary below is just a short sweet explanation. I plan on doing a more in depth study on the Godhead, Trinity, and Modalism coming soon.

The first question is why does it matter what we think of the Trinity? Some say it is not important that we just need to focus on Jesus! In a way yes, we do need to focus on Jesus because the whole theme of the Scriptures is our redemption from sin and death through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ from cover to cover. I do believe that the Doctrine of the Trinity/Godhead are important. However, it is important because it shows us who Jesus was.

For definitive proof of the Godhead I am going to get into some controversy” with this verse by modern Bible readers. But, 1 John 5:71 is the clearest and most direct verse describing the Trinity/Godhead.

In the above Scripture we see that these 3 are 1. Uno! How can 3 be 1? That is a mystery. Many Christian philosophers have tried to break it down and describe it the best they can. I am somewhat ok with that, but I also like to caution that doing so tries to bring God down to our level and that just will never happen. God is infinite and can never truly be described in a finite way. Once we are with Him hopefully this will be made clear. I will have to add I doubt anyone will even consider this when we are with our Lord and able to worship at his physical feet.

You might be wondering though, are there other verses describing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as one? Yes! Matt. 28:192 gives you the Godhead there as well. Baptism is one of the few institutions along with Communion that a Christian has been told to do and it is the outward showing of professing faith. We are told to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. They are the One and Same God. We also have Mat 3:16-173 when you see the Spirit of God descending and the voice of the Father addressing the Son. Once again, the 3 described in Scripture. There are other passages as well. John 1:1-144, John 5:175, John 8:18,546, John 10:25-307, John 148, Acts 7:569, 2 Cor 13:1410, 1 Tim 3:1611, 2 Peter 1:16-17,2112 .

I hope these verses help solidify the concept of the Trinity/Godhead and help you realize that we worship the 1 true and live God!

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14

  1. 1 John 5:7 (AV) For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.↩︎

  2. Matthew 28:19 (AV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:↩︎

  3. Matthew 3:16-17 (AV) And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.↩︎

  4. John 1:1-14 (AV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.↩︎

  5. John 5:7 (AV) The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.↩︎

  6. John 8:18,54-55 (AV) I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.↩︎

  7. John 10:25-30 (AV) Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.↩︎

  8. John 14:1-31 (AV) Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.↩︎

  9. Acts 7:56 (AV) And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.↩︎

  10. 2 Corinthians 13:14 (AV) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.↩︎

  11. 1 Timothy 3:16 (AV) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.↩︎

  12. 2 Peter 1:16-21 (AV) For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.↩︎
